Something to Ponder – A Disciple and His Worship

We live in a busy society.  Families are involved in every activity imaginable.  There are not many hours left over during the course of a week, because we pack in every event and activity we can.  Needless to say that by the time Sunday rolls around we are simply too tired to do anything else or go anywhere such as church.  The ironic thing is we spend all this “time” being with “family”, yet we use the excuse Sunday is the only time we have to be together as a family.

When we study God’s Word, we find that He commands us to take a day of rest.  We should not take this out of context, however.  God’s command is that we do rest, but that we also worship.  What we have lost sight of is what it is to truly worship God, and we probably have no clue how to rest, truly rest.  If we want to know how to truly worship God and rest, we should study His Word.  God will help us know what it is to worship Him and to find rest in Him as well.

The Bible refers to the Lord’s Day as the Sabbath.  The word Sabbath simply means to rest.  Another way to understand a Sabbath is to realize we are to cease from our labors.  This helps us to understand that the Sabbath is the Lord’s and we are to worship Him on this day.  He is to be the object of our affection on the Sabbath.  Our goal, as a disciple of Jesus is to obey God’s command and to both worship and rest on the Sabbath.

As you prepare for this Wednesday night, I want you to meditate on this verse:

Psa_84:10  For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Now, take a few minutes and think of a worship service that was particularly meaningful to you or your family.  How did this worship service affect your family?  How did it change your life?

One thing that we need to point out before we proceed is that worship can and should take place in a place other than the Sanctuary (Worship Center) and it can take place on days other than Sunday.  However, we have lost sight of the importance of the Lord’s day and what we are supposed to do on the Lord’s day.  We are supposed to worship, and we are supposed to rest. Join us this Wednesday as we examine Mark 4 of a Disciple, A Disciple and his Worship.
